Memorial Day is not just a day to have three days holidays and chill around the corner or eat loads of grilled meats. There are a lot of reasons to love these holidays. So before you head out to your barbecue or pool party this holiday, I would like to share some major facts regarding Memorial Day. Memorial Day is just above this three-day weekend that we spend in different activities. It is a day to honor those brave soldiers who fought the civil war and laid their lives for the freedom which is still present till now. It is also a big day to thank all of them who didn`t think of anything else except that they needed to fight for their country, we should remember such brave men.

For nearly 150 years, American people gathered in late spring to honor the sacrifice of the soldiers who laid their lives in service to their country. This day is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those 620,000 soldiers from both sides who lost their lives in the civil war. The Civil war was ended in the spring of 1865, which claimed many lives and the loss of lives of the brave soldiers including men and women. It`s effect on communities led to damage of lives, land, nature and many other disasters which occurred throughout the country. This is one of those dreadful memorial day history facts which are not so pleasant to hear.

Originally commemorating the union of soldiers fallen in the American Civil war, Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day. Women named Boalsburg, Pa 1864 put flowers on the grave of their just dead soldiers. Then from the next year onward, women used to decorate the graves of the brave soldiers which were buried in Vicksburg, Miss. Cemetery. The day of Decoration day was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle. Many northern states held the same event, but in 1890 Decoration Day as made an official holiday. So this was the reason why this day was called as Decoration Day in early years.

HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY: 

Memorial day which was celebrated as Decoration Day before, gradually turned to become the official day to honor all the U.S Military officials who laid their lives and turn out to be the excellent example of courage, love, care and passion towards the country and also for the people. This was a courageous act, perfect illustration of patriotism which not only those who laid their lives showed but also today we are should try to demonstrate. By being a good and responsible citizen and showing loyalty towards the country through every possible way.

In 1971 Memorial Day become a bureaucrat Holiday day for all the civilians. On every Memorial Day, almost 40 million Americans take a trip of approx 50 miles from their homes and creates a lot of traffic on the roads just to reach that place where the honor ceremony is held every day to remember those soldiers and  also to pray and it is also a great gesture of respect and love people do till today. Every event has its tradition values and respect, this day which is now popular as Memorial Day also have a particularly special way of expressing the love, care and respect for the soldiers of that civil war, wearing red poppies is the common tradition of Memorial Day. Men and women both are given some red poppies to hang it in their coat or just to hold in the hand while standing with bowing heads down which portrait as a symbol of respect and honor for all those American soldiers. This tradition was originated by a poem called “In The Flanders Field” written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915, as this tradition became more popular year by year so in 1924 there was a shortage of red poppies from French manufacturers. So the first factory to create artificial poppies was established in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It employed many people who needed a job.

Every year in Washington DC, a special motorbike rally is conducted by the young people on every  Memorial Day. Bikers hold an event known as The Rolling Thunder Run, In this annual motorbike, rally participants broaden the awareness regarding Prisoner of Wars and those Missing in Action. This rally was started out with some 2,500 participants in 1988.  It is a major event with almost a million bikers are involved in this every year.
